When a user is drawing in the canvas, Krita also renders many widgets that are not part of the painting. Each of these can be ignored, but many of them are not. These widgets can be quite important for the proper painting, for example:

the toolbox widgets (pens, pencils, eraser, etc…)
the shader presets (achromatic, grayscale, color, etc…)
the color selector (all the available color options)

When Krita renders the toolbox, it needs to know which preset is the current preset. To do so, the toolbox widget needs a reference to the color selector (to know which preset the user selected).

A simple solution for this problem is to have the canvas widget update the color of the toolbox widget whenever it changes (while painting), that is: when the user starts painting, the canvas widget will update the color in the toolbox widget to match the color in the color selector. Krita used to have this feature in earlier versions, but the wheel widget in the canvas widget was not updated (when the canvas widget updates a widget, the widgets are updated, but the canvas widget is not). The canvas widget now also updates the wheel widget, which solves this situation.

Krita users can now use the new five finger gesture access shortcuts to navigate around the timeline. The new navigation shortcuts work for navigating forwards and backwards by frame, and are retained from Krita 4.5.x.

In Krita, we have a lot of items that require a lot of space, and to do this, we have a bunch of “resources”. To reduce the GUI clutter, we have put most of these items out of the way. For instance, the gradients and fills have been moved to the menu, and the histograms are now right in the tool.
